Mixing Elements: Dressing Up Cargo Pants

I love mixing casual elements with something dressier – or is it vice versa? Regardless, the combination gives me an opportunity to bridge the gap between the two and find something fun and unexpected in the process. This can prove especially helpful when I’m attending an event and I’m not completely sure of the dress code. Some might say if you’re a little bit of everything you’re a lot of nothing. Okay, I just came up with that, but it’s simply a variation on a the old theme “if you try to please everyone you’ll end up pleasing no one.” In either event, I say “Baloney!” I believe the whole idea of exploring style is mixing pieces to find a look that suits you: your taste, your body type, your comfort zone (or just outside of it).

In that vein I decided to dress up my cargo pants with a silky top and matching heels.  These cargos by Chico’s are so soft, but they wrinkle easily.  That worked for me here, but may not be your preference.   Regarding the shoes, I think the strappy sandals were a better choice than pumps for this look. They’re dressy but lend themselves to a casual feel more readily than pumps. I had nude pumps on deck in case I changed my mind, but my final choice is the look I was going for.  The royal blue added just the punch I wanted, too.  Point, Helen.

How do you feeling about mixing elements to create a unique look? Do you embrace the idea? Or would you prefer to keep each piece in its perceived category? Just for fun, you might enjoy stepping out a bit and giving it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.
