An early Mele Kalikimaka to you! My husband, Andy, and I just got back from our trip to Kauai and it was fantastic. Big surprise – I had never been to Hawaii! I won’t bore you with the less-than-stellar travel details to and from the island (it was awful — redirected routes and 12 hour delays). The actual visit was fabulous.
Andy and I decided we weren’t doing the touristy stuff. We wanted to hit restaurants the locals liked, try different versions of Kona Coffee, see the beauty of the “Garden Isle” and especially visit its majestic waterfalls. There were two which were easily accessed by car. Hanakapai’i Falls as pictured above? Not so much.
The trail started out a bit steep, but otherwise pretty easy. Muddy, but easy. then the rocks turned to small boulders and fallen trees. You can see me climbing over one in the third picture. We crossed the stream below the falls at least five times. I finally gave up trying to keep my feet dry jumping stone to stone and just walked through the water. You see the picture of the sky – it’s not like I was going to be dry at all.
But the hard work was rewarded with these dramatic falls. You get an idea of their height by the size of the hiker in the foreground, but she is quite a bit into the foreground, so the scale is a bit skewed here.
Thanks for visiting!
What gorgeous scenery! We haven’t been to Hawaii in about 15 years…think it’s time to go back!
I’ve never been to Hawaii! Husband went twice on business but for some strange reason I couldn’t go….can’t remember why, but it must have been good to keep me away! It’s just such a trek from the East coast; but someday!
Funny how that works out. We’ve had a timeshare for years and have hardly used it. They actually called us to get the ball rolling for this trip! I’m so glad they did. But i agree with you – even from the West coast it was a couple of long days of traveling!
