“Don’t wear white after Labor Day.” Says who? I love the way style rules have been broken over time. It’s true certain “rules” just make sense, like “no suede in summer”. I remember my mom frowning one June day when I walked out in navy suede pumps.
“You’re wearing suede?” she asked. “Uh huh,” was my answer. “Oh” she responded. You know the tone, the one of mild disapproval, the I-wouldn’t-if-I-were-you voice. Although I wouldn’t have cared about the rule on its face, suede can get warm, making it a poor summer choice. The “rule” was probably less for fashion and more for comfort.
White in fall is a different story. It’s not about comfort or fabric choice. White denim comes in the same varied weights as blue, so why can’t it be worn in the fall? I guess traditionally we’ve been ready to move into darker colors as the days shorten. Perhaps we naturally gravitate to the deep, rich colors that mimic changing leaves. Maybe we’re just ready for the antithesis of summer.
Personally, I love white jeans in fall. It’s about the contrast and the unexpected color pairing. This burgundy and grey mix would have a completely different vibe with blue or black jeans. A touch of white keeps things a bit light, literally. Tucked into over-the-knee boots the white isn’t overpowering, it’s a perfect accent.
No white after Labor Day is a rule I like to break. White jeans – fall style is one way to do it. What fashion rules do you break?
Happy Monday, Lovelies! Thanks so much for stopping by!
